The Government of Kenya has officially entered the active implementation phase of its $1.2 billion (Ksh 154.2 billion) Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Modernisation Project. Following the signing of a pivotal agreement, two global engineering powerhouses have taken the wheel to bring Kenya’s premier gateway into a new era of global aviation.

The Elite Alliance: World-Class Project Prowess

To execute a mega-project of this scale, Kenya has assembled a dream team of international and local expertise:

  • Dar Al-Handasah (Lead Consultant): Founded in Lebanon, this global giant has been officially hired to oversee independent engineering supervision, design reviews, and rigorous project management. Consistently ranked by the Engineering News-Record (ENR) among the top 10 international design firms in the world for nearly two decades, Dar Al-Handasah brings unparalleled prestige. Their portfolio includes iconic global landmarks and complex airport expansions worldwide, ensuring the JKIA modernization is executed to the highest international standards of safety, quality, and budget adherence.
  • China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC): Appointed as the primary Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) partner, CRBC will handle the physical design and build phases.
  • Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) & Ministry of Roads and Transport: Providing direct state oversight to align this massive infrastructure layout with Kenya’s long-term national goals.

  • A Brand-New Passenger Terminal: The architectural crown jewel of the project will be a state-of-the-art terminal building engineered to handle massive passenger flows seamlessly. Expect sustainable, modern architecture focused on open spaces, natural lighting, and high-efficiency passenger processing.
  • Complete Airside & Landside Overhaul: From smoother aircraft taxiing and parking zones (airside) to optimized passenger drop-off points, parking structures, and airport access roads (landside), every square inch of JKIA’s operations is being redesigned to eliminate bottlenecks.

Historically, JKIA was designed for a cozy capacity of 7.5 million passengers annually. Today’s demands have far outstripped that legacy footprint.

Upon completion of this modernization project, JKIA will expand its capacity to 22 million passengers annually. This massive jump doesn’t just relieve congestion; it entirely redefines Kenya’s standing in global aviation. Project Timeline and Milestones

The $1.2 billion (Ksh 154.2 billion) modernization of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is structured on an ambitious 36-month “Design-and-Build” delivery schedule. Anchored by the 2026 Master Plan, the project features tightly orchestrated milestones to minimize operational disruption while rapidly scaling JKIA’s capacity.

The detailed timeline of the project is outlined below:

Master Plan Finalization

February 2026

The comprehensive 20-year JKIA Integrated Master Plan is finalized by lead consultant Dar Al-Handasah, establishing the technical blueprint for the airport’s 22-million-passenger future.

Pre-Bid & Competitive Tendering

April 2026

A major pre-bid conference is hosted by the Kenyan Government, drawing interest and competitive proposals from over 40 local and international engineering firms.

EPC Contract Awarded to CRBC

June 23, 2026

The official Design-and-Build contract is executed between the State Department for Aviation and China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), officially setting the 36-month construction clock in motion.

Supervision Phase Initiated

July 15, 2026

Dar Al-Handasah officially signs the engineering supervision and project management contract, kicking off on-site design reviews, budget compliance, and quality control.

Immediate Airside Equipment Upgrades

By Mid-2027

Targeted installation of modern passenger boarding bridges and updated ground-handling equipment to ease immediate airport bottlenecks while heavy construction gets underway.

New Terminal & Phase 1 Completion

Mid-2029 (Target)

Completion of the state-of-the-art passenger terminal and comprehensive airside/landside efficiency upgrades, officially bringing JKIA’s total passenger capacity to 22 million annually.

Key Construction Milestones & Targets

  • Operational Capacity Scale-Up: A jump from the current 7.5 million passengers to 22 million passengers annually.
  • Air Traffic Throughput: Upgrading technical airside operations to increase the airport’s arrival handling capacity from 25 to 31 aircraft per hour.
  • Physical Scope: Construction of the new primary terminal building, upgraded utility and support infrastructure, and completely overhauled landside vehicle access networks.
