When the Obama Presidential Center Museum opened its doors to the public in Chicago’s historic South Side, it marked more than just the debut of a new landmark. It established a vibrant, living monument to the enduring legacy of the 44th President and First Lady Michelle Obama. Spanning four immersive exhibition levels and nearly 35,000 square feet, this groundbreaking space transforms the traditional presidential archive into an active call to civic participation.
Designed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA) in collaboration with the Obama Foundation, the museum’s interior is a masterpiece of narrative storytelling. It intentionally weaves the personal histories of Barack and Michelle Obama into the broader, collective tapestry of American democracy and grassroots movements.

A Journey through Hope: The Four Exhibition Levels
Rather than presenting history as a static timeline, the architects at RAA organized the museum as a sequential journey through the core values of the Obama presidency. Visitors ascend through four beautifully curated galleries that connect the administration’s landmark achievements with everyday civic duty:
- Toward a More Perfect Union: The journey begins in an illuminated, prismatic gallery that grounds American democratic ideals in the diverse, collective voices that have fought for inclusion throughout history.
- Working for the Common Good: This level highlights the policies, challenges, and monumental victories of the administration, from economic recovery to the passage of the Affordable Care Act.
- The People’s House: A deeply intimate floor celebrating how the Obamas redefined the cultural fabric of the White House, making it an inclusive space that mirrored the true diversity of the American people.
- We the People: The final level asks visitors to look inward and find power in their own communities, demonstrating that the ultimate legacy of the Obama administration belongs to ordinary citizens.

Reliving the Power of “Yes We Can”
One of the museum’s most emotionally resonant spaces is the YES WE CAN Campaign gallery. This circular room utilizes breathtaking panoramic media and authentic volunteer recordings to drop visitors right into the electric energy of the 2008 grassroots movement. By showcasing crowd-sourced campaign buttons, handwritten notes, and homemade posters, the exhibit emphasizes a fundamental truth of the Obama legacy: real change doesn’t start from the top down; it sparks from the ground up.

Opening the Doors to “The People’s House”
The Obama legacy is deeply tied to accessibility, and The People’s House exhibition honors how the first family broke down barriers at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Through meticulously detailed miniature room replicas, visitors get a playful yet profound look into how the White House functioned as a working family home, a diplomatic stage, and a vibrant cultural hub. From displaying iconic state gifts and sports memorabilia to highlighting Michelle Obama’s historic public programs and the fashion choices that championed independent designers, the gallery illustrates a presidency defined by warmth, visibility, and an unshakeable sense of belonging.
“Democracy is a living, breathing concept built through everyday participation rather than something held at a distance.” — Core theme of the Imagine Your Impact interactive exhibit.

Where Art Meets Activism: Julie Mehretu’s Masterpiece
The exterior of the museum building is just as narrative-driven as the interior. Rising majestically on the north facade is Uprising of the Sun, a monumental painted glass window by acclaimed artist Julie Mehretu. Measuring a staggering 83 feet tall by 25 feet wide, this permanent commission consists of 35 abstract panels. The piece draws direct inspiration from President Obama’s historic speech during the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery marches. As sunlight filters through the layers of vibrant color and kinetic abstractions, the window changes dynamically depending on where you stand inside the tower. It serves as a breathtaking physical reminder of the long, non-linear journey toward justice and equality. This masterpiece is beautifully accompanied inside the museum by integrated works from other visionary contemporary artists, including:
- Jeffrey Gibson
- Jules Julien
- María Magdalena Campos-Pons

The Ultimate Takeaway of the Obama Legacy
Ultimately, the Obama Presidential Center Museum refuses to be a simple exercise in nostalgia. Through interactive installations like Imagine Your Impact, the museum shifts the spotlight from the past to the future. It challenges every visitor to leave the South Side of Chicago with a renewed commitment to their own communities, perfectly encapsulating Barack Obama’s belief that the most important title in a democracy is not “President,” but “Citizen.”
