Following Diébédo Francis Kéré and Kéré Architecture’s unique approach to community architecture which can be described as an inclusive approach to design, construction, and management of the built environment with intent to directly involve local users instead of banking solely on expert anticipation, the global renowned architectural firm known for their expertise in exploring local material to build exclusive tailored projects like community centers as sustainable spaces and housing that reflect local culture, foster social connection and enhancing users experience has completed and opened the Goethe-Institut Sénégal in Dakar, Senegal.
Perforated facades create a breathable envelope
The project is the organization’s first purpose-built home in the country, standing as a creative local landmark that elaborates how cultural institutions establish their presence globally. The adaptive reuse approach of the project makes it different from specific architecture. The project gives rooms to residents and community stakeholders as key partners during its construction, a decision that transforms them from passive consumers into active creators of their environment.
A network of pathways connects programmatic elements
Locally sourced compacted materials from its rich environment were used to build the structure. This leads to cultural inclusiveness which aligns with Architect Kéré’s long-standing approach of elevating local knowledge, labor, and resources into contemporary architectural language which won him the 2022 Pritzker Prize, the highest honor in architecture.
The project’s ground level prioritizes gathering
Conceptualized by context within a residential neighborhood, the design team at Kéré Architecture conceive the project to improve the quality of co-existence in the community as it meets the actual needs of users through sustainability, philosophical and social gain which makes it a cherished idea that encourages a stronger sense of belonging and empowerment.
Framed views through the permeable skin establish visual continuity
